![]() Bourtange Fortress |
Architectural 'stars' in many respects shine on both sides of the German-Dutch boarder. The ground plan of the fortress town Meppen shows a star-shaped rampart. The Dutch fortress Bourtange is likewise designed in the form of a star. The hunting lodge in the parklands of Clemenswerth Castle, which was constructed by Clemens August, elector of Cologne, exudes particular lustre. The other castles and manors in the region, including Haus Altenkamp near Papenburg and the Dutch estates (Havezathen) in Drenthe, may also be regarded as 'stars'. All of them are well worth a visit and can be reached without having to venture far afield. |
