Magnificent old avenues lead visitors to the site at the Koppelschleuse Meppen. The classical building, once belonging to the Royal Hanoverian Hydraulic Engineering Inspection Authority, forms part of the locks which were constructed in 1828. It has been the home of the Art Circle of Meppen and the School of Art since 1981. The Exhibition Centre for Archaeology of the Emsland District, which was opened in 1996, is located just next door. The Centre regularly exhibits works of the expressive realist Otto Pankok in addition to significant prehistoric and ancient findings. Close to these two buildings is a Youth and Culture Guest House nestling in parkland and combines both historic and contemporary architecture. |
